I was assigned to a first time Mom who had given birth the
prior PM. The nurse told me the parents are looking for breastfeeding
guidance. I was so nervous. I did just read over the breastfeeding
information, different position, how often, latching on, Vit.
E rub on sore nipples .etc the night before. I figured they
may have one or two questions and I would just have to try
to remember what I had read and anything I didn't know I could
go and ask my instructor and get back to them. Walking towards
the room I had no confidence. What did I really know about
breastfeeding? I never had a baby. I grabbed a few pt. information
pamphlets, took a deep breath and walked into the room.
There was the Mom and Dad and the adorable newborn. I introduced
myself and asked if they'd like information on breastfeeding.
I got an overwhelming response from the couple. They were
so relieved to see me and I was surprised to see such anxiety
in the eyes of both parents trying to feed their baby by themselves
for the first time.
I realized by just being there I was already comforting the
parents. I calmly assessed how she was holding the baby and
suggested and helped her into the "football" hold
and the baby latched on. <thank God>
The parents then began to rapid fire questions at me about
everything related to newborn care and some I remembered from
class/book and I also went through the pt. information sheets
with them. They were hanging on my every word. As I calmly
answered their questions (and many questions more then once)
I was amazed at how much originally I felt I didn't know but,
actually did know and was able to provide education and comfort
for these parents.
It was a turning point as a student as far a boosting my
confidence.
