During my Psychiatric rotation this semester I encountered
many interesting people. I had one interaction with a client
who made me feel very uncomfortable because I felt like he
was trying to come on to me. I tried to redirect the conversation
to him but seemed like all he wanted to talk about was me.
He asked me questions about what school I went to, where is
it at, and where I lived. I was extremely uncomfortable so
I tried to put my therapeutic skills to work but, still no
progress. So in the end I just had to end the conversation.
When I went home I almost felt defeated because I waned to
know what was it that I could have said to make the conversation
go a little more smoother. Then I thought about it for a while
and came to the conclusion that I can not be perfect with
everyone. I learned to recognize when a conversation is going
in the wrong direction. So for all of you nursing students
out there if you have a client that will not talk to you or
the conversation just is not going well don't feel like you
don't know how to use therapeutic communication it's just
that we have to get the hang of it and every client is not
going to be cooperative with you all the time.
